Maine Blackfly Breeders Association

Welcome to the MBBA Bitesite!

The MBBA celebrates Blackflies all year round but especially in the Spring. At the end of a long Maine winter we are eager to go outside and enjoy some warmer weather. About mid-May, just when our trees start putting out leaves, birds are migrating north and fish are swimming up rivers and streams - that is when millions of blackflies hatch in huge swarms. Clouds of Blackflies surround us looking for a good place to bite. Instead of going crazy and running around spraying every insect in sight, we recommend cultivating a healthy Maine sense of humor. Combine that with some education about the beneficial contributions of Blackflies to the survival of other species, such as birds and fish. You might want to celebrate with us. Maybe you'll even quit swatting them!
